We’re starting to prepare for winter: clearing, feeding and covering some of the beds. The covered beds will have a little rest over winter, so the soil does not lose fertility. The beds still in production will provide slow, steady growth through autumn and winter—and some may still be plodding along into early spring giving us a welcomed late crop before another turnover.

The cabbages we cut back have sprung back to life as fresh, leafy cabagettes. By leaving the stems in the ground, they can regrow as loose foliage rather than forming another compact cabbage.

Our winter salad is recovering after the slug attack. We’d fallen a little behind with the weeding, and some areas had become overcrowded, giving the slugs plenty of places to hide. Now that we’re getting on top of the weeds, the salad is beginning to pick up.

Polytunnels are wonderful, but they need regular attention. Too much moisture can lead to rotting crops, creating the perfect conditions for pests and disease.

And there are still a few green peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers lurking about!
