Winter Creepers 🥬
Wow, what a hot, sweaty summer it’s been! Although autumn is beginning to make an appearance—with cooler early mornings and chilly late evenings—the summer crops in the polytunnel are still going strong.
The extra warmth and shelter from our polytunnels have extended our harvest of aubergines, basil and tomatoes all the way into October. 🍅🌿
Some winter crops are starting to creep in too: rainbow chard, bok choy, winter lettuce and winter salad leaves. The winter salad mix is a little behind this year after being nibbled by caterpillars, along with a few watering and timing challenges—but hey, these things happen! Hopefully, the extra water and coolerweather will give them a boost.
Looking ahead to next spring, we’re planning to grow Italian rappe, as well as more red lettuce. Italian rappe is one of my childhood favourites: a delicious Calabrian green with a sharp, distinctive flavour. It’s similar to tenderstem broccoli, but leafier and darker in colour—perfect for traditional Calabrian dishes. 💚
