🌳🌲 Tree Planting Day — Saturday 21st November, 9:30am, Gelli Aur

Together, we’ll plant nearly 300 tree saplings communally on our land, with hot drinks and cawl to keep us warm.

Please bring gardening gloves, a water bottle, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. 🧤💧🧥

There’s something special about creating spaces like this together — giving back to nature by planting trees that will not only serve us directly, but invite more wildness onto the land. We’ll imprint our loving energy into the soil through togetherness, laughter and hard graft, leaving behind not only young trees, but a shared act of care for the future. 🐝🌳

These saplings will mature into hedgerows and living windbreaks — slowing the wind, sheltering our polytunnels and helping to create gentler microclimates.

We’re aiming to plant something sustainable and resilient by planting a mixed variety of native species in well-considered locations.

Near crops, we’re choosing trees that work with the soil rather than taking too much from it. These include nitrogen-fixing species such as the mighty alder, alongside beautiful hazel, which returns calcium, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus to the soil as its leaves fall and decompose. In time, they will offer food, shelter and safe passage for birds, insects and all the small wild lives that make a farm feel alive.

Another windbreak will protect the area allocated for our future orchard. We’re avoiding planting species such as willow too close to the orchard or crop beds, as their fast growth and high water and nutrient needs can compete with the fruit trees and vegetables.

There is something deeply comforting about being nestled among trees — watching them dance in the wind, blossom in the sun, and slowly become home to so much more than ourselves.

This is conscious farming: planting for the future, for biodiversity, for beauty, and for the generations who will walk beneath these branches long after us. 🐝🍎
