Field News September 21st 2026

This had been a week of catch up and also of a shift in perspectives. We are catching up on many jobs around the field from the week off we have had recently. There are crops that have needed picking hard like the Courgettes and Runner Beans and some that have needed maintanence and cutting back like the Tomatoes. A fresh bout of new weeds have sprung up following the rainfall we are having. The heatwave forced loads and loads of weeds to go to seed in a big way, we are now seeing these weed seeds germinating and forming a lovely green carpet of tiny weeds in the veg beds!

The shift in perspective is that of the season change. All summer we have been focusing on the growth and care of the plants, helping them reach their way to become harvest ready. We now see quite a few crops start to slow down and decline in production. This means we start to turn our attention to clearing some beds and removing the old crops. You can see from the courgette plants here that they are becoming quite weathered now in the cold.

The Tomatoes are still going well. They have slowed down quite a bit in the colder weather and they have developed blight now on the lower leaves but they are still looking healthy in general and producing tomatoes well. Some of the plants have become so heavy their strings that hold them up started to snap and there has been a bit of running around trying to tie them back up again.

Cucumbers still producing but have slowed way way down now. I dont think the plants will last too much longer and we will be looking to remove them in the next few weeks. The same applies to the Pepper plants.

We have some crops up and coming however as we move in to the more autumnal weather. We planted a later sowing Celery in the polytunnel and it has survived the heat of July and Autumn. It is now growing well in the cooler weather and should be ready to pick very soon. The same applies to our Parsnips, they are starting to look good now too. We are going to pick these early this year.

All in all the whole field is recovering from the total dry we have had this summer. There has been a fair bit of weed seed spread all over the field which will take us a while to recover from but we can do it! Thanks for reading and see you next week and hope you enjoy this weeks veggies!
